(VNA) - Viet Nam expects to receive 3.6 million foreign visitors in 2006, 200,000 more than last year, predicted a senior official of the General Department of Tourism.

Deputy Head of the General Department Hoang Anh Tuan said Viet Nam's tourism industry is estimated to fetch a total revenue of 36 trillion VND (roughly 2.25 billion USD) in 2006, adding that the industry has created 250,000 new jobs and helped 600,000 people to earn their living.

According to statistics released by the general department, the Government in 2006 allocated 620 billion VND for 59 provinces and cities to develop tourism infrastructure, while the industry received 2.2 billion USD in investment in the last 9 months.

Tuan was optimistic that Viet Nam will receive some 4.4 foreign visitors in 2007, noting that large numbers of holiday makers will come from the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Australia./.
