Germany hopes for ambitious EU- Viet Nam cooperation

Germany is looking for a Free Trade Treaty and a comprehensive cooperation agreement between the European Union and Viet Nam during its six-month rotary presidency of the bloc, which began on January 2007.

The German Ambassador to Viet Nam, Christian-Ludwig Weber-Lortsch, told reporters on Jan. 18 that his country has an ambitious plan in relations with EU and Asia, in which Viet Nam will play an important role."

The above-mentioned two major accords are high in Germany's working itinery during its EU presidency term.

EC-Viet Nam mission head Markus Cornaro meanwhile promised to coordinate action with the Germany Ambassador to Viet Nam to bring about a detailed plan on the two potential deals on the 50th EU founding anniversary, March 25.

Once the deals are signed, relations between Viet Nam and EU would strongly develop and gear to a broader dimension, said Cornaro.

EU is now Viet Nam's third largest trade partner after its export revenues reached 2.7 billion USD in 2006, representing a year-on-year increase of 27 percent, while its imports from Viet Nam stood at 6.4 billion USD.
Seafoods, footwear and garments are products highly appreciated by German clients, said the German Ambassador.

EU invested 275 million USD in Viet Nam in 2006 and pledged 948 million USD in Official Development Assistance in 2007./.
