More Vietnamese expats return home for Tet

(VNA) - About 150,000 overseas Vietnamese, many of them born outside the country, come to the native land to celebrate the traditional lunar new year (Tet) festival, said the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese of the Foreign Ministry.

The total number of overseas Vietnamese visiting Viet Nam in the whole year of 2006 thus reached 670,000, much more than previous years, said the committee.

Besides reunion with relatives in Viet Nam, Vietnamese expats made sightseeing to landscapes as well as potential economic areas to study opportunities for business.

During the Tet festival, overseas Vietnamese also organised various activities to raise funds for local disadvantaged people, such as music performances by Vietnamese expats from Germany and San Francisco city (the USA).

Also according to the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, the returnees have showed their delight at the homeland's achievements, especially its admission to the World Trade Organisation and hosting of the APEC Economic Leaders' Week in 2006./.
