Gov't re-emphasises care for children
Hung made the statement at a national mid-term review of the follow-up of the UN document entitled "A world fit for children" in Ha Noi on March 26.
The Deputy PM said the Government will continue pursuing the policy and invest more money in this social affair, especially in supporting children to develop physically, mentally and virtually, in the years to come when the nation enjoys fast economic development.
He extolled contributions made by UN development agencies, foreign Governments and foreign non-Governmental organisations to Viet Nam's good record in implementing the Millennium Development Goals and the UN resolution on children.
In return, UNICEF Deputy Director Kul Gautum praised the Vietnamese Government for strong support to UNICEF and other regional countries in child care and protection.
He said Viet Nam was ranked first among developing countries in implementing the UN Convention on the Right of the Child.
The country was the first in Asia and second in the World to ratify the Convention.
Deputy Director of the National Committee on Population, Family and Children Nguyen Ba Thuy reported the progress made in the past 15 years of implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the past five years' implementing the UN document entitled "A World fit for children."
He said the national plan of action on children for the first decade of the 21st century has helped them better enjoy more basic rights and further equality.
More favourable conditions have been created to ensure children's rights to education and entertainments, an increasing number of disadvantaged children has been given special care and all children under six are provided with free medical check-ups and treatment, according to Thuy's report.
The World Fit for Children document was passed by governmental leaders at a special session on children of the UN General Assembly in 2002, calling on the world to protect and develop children's rights and social welfare./.
