NA Chairman on success of China visit

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong and his delegation left Nanning, Guangxi province, for Ha Noi on Apr. 15, concluding a highly successful official friendship visit to China.

Interviewed at the end of his visit, Chairman Trong briefed Viet Nam News Agency correspondents of the three most major achievements.

First, the visit contributed to boosting mutual understanding and political trust, promoting the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties, States and people of Viet Nam and China, he said. Chairman Trong and China's Party General Secretary and State President Hu Jintao, Chinese National People's Congress Standing Committee Wu Bangguo and Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Jia Qinglin reached common awareness through talks and meetings, he noted. The two Parties, States and people will continue to strengthen and further promote their traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation, he added.

Secondly, the visit helped accelerate economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries. The goal of 10 billion USD in two-way trade value by 2010 has been obtained ahead of schedule, and both sides said that a new target of 15 billion USD by 2010 is achievable.

Thirdly, the visit boosted mutual understanding between the two legislatures.

With regard to the future development of bilateral relations in general and the ties between the two legislative bodies in particular, the chairman said: "General Secretary and State President Hu Jintao reaffirmed what we are doing at present and in the future is aimed at fostering relations between the two countries, in the spirit of the joint agreement reached between the two party leaders in 2006. He also put forth four specific measures, including a continuation of development in political ties and increasing mutual trust under the motto ‘friendly neighbourliness, comprehensive cooperation, long-lasting stability and future-oriented vision’ as good neighbours, good friends, good comrades and good partners."

In the future, the two sides will resolve issues, including the completion of land border demarcation and landmark planting by 2008, and efficiently executing the agreements on the demarcation of the Tonkin Gulf and fisheries, the chairman said.

The two countries will continue research to delineate the territorial waters surrounding the Tonkin Gulf, in the spirit of maintaining stability in the Eastern Sea, he said.

Parallel efforts will be made by the two countries to efficiently carry out on-going projects, such as thermo-electric and hydro-electric power plants and infrastructure development, and boost the exchange of visits at all levels in the spirit of mutual trust, the chairman added.-VNA
