Viet Nam-Indonesia continental shelf agreement takes effect

Viet Nam and Indonesia on May 29 exchanged documents approving the Agreement on Delineation of Continental Shelf that came into force the same day.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vu Dung and his Indonesian counterpart Eddy Pratomo conducted the exchange at a ceremony in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Speaking at the ceremony, both Dung and Pratomo highlighted the enforcement of the agreement, saying it would prove to be a foundation for Viet Nam and Indonesia to implement rights to sovereignty, jurisdiction, management and exploitation over their respective continental shelves.

The two sides also pledged to strictly observe the regulations of the agreement in order to contribute to promoting bilateral friendly and cooperative relations, as well as maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the East Sea.

Viet Nam and Indonesia signed the agreement in Ha Noi on June 26, 2003, after 25 years of negotiations on the basis of international laws and practices, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.(VNA)
