Government to get tough on corruption

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung vowed to be tough on corruption and wasteful spending at the closing session of the Government's regular meeting in Ha Noi on July 3.

He ordered all suspicious cases to be investigated in a prompt and thorough manner and requested that the Steering Board for Corruption Prevention and Combat reinforce inspections at all State agencies and localities.

At the meeting, the PM also voiced concern about food safety and instructed agencies to create a specialised unit to work on the issue.

In the second half of the year all ministries, sectors and localities must redouble their efforts in order to hasten administrative reforms, curb traffic accidents and combat epidemic diseases, the PM said.

According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the country's GDP grew by 7.87 percent since January, the highest first half growth rate recorded in the last five years.

Export earning in the first half grew 19.4 percent to 22.4 billion USD and imports reached 27.1 billion USD. New foreign investment in the country amounted to 5.2 billion USD in the past six months, up 8 percent over the corresponding period last year.

The ministry also reported that the consumer price index surged by 5.2 percent and 78,000 new jobs were created.(VNA)
