IT industry moves up international ladder
According to a report about the Viet Nam's IT industry in 2007, released by the HCA on July 9, Viet Nam ranks 95th and 99th out of 132 surveyed countries around the world in terms of the Knowledge Index (KI) and the Knowledge Economic Index (KEI), respectively, 14 places higher than the previous year.
The KI is the simple average that a country scores on key variables in three areas - education, innovation and information; and telecommunication technology (ICT). The KEI is an aggregate index that represents the overall level of development of a country or region towards a knowledge-based economy. The indexes are part of World Bank's knowledge for development programme.
Viet Nam has leapt five places to rank 111th out of 183 countries in terms of IT development. Particularly, the rate of software copyright violations in the country reduced by 2 percent.
These positive results reflect the leaping development of the country's IT sector over the past year. The IT market expanded by 22.6 percent in 2006, surpassing the 1 billion USD mark, of which, software and services increased 43.9 percent.
However, the International Data Group (IDG) in Viet Nam forecast that the growth rate is likely to reduce to between 13-15 percent for the next few years, urging domestic IT businesses to further pursue foreign markets.
The past year also witnessed a rapid development in Internet use in Viet Nam with a growth rate of 25 percent. This places the country 17th in terms of global Internet usage. The number of Internet users in Viet Nam accounted for 20 percent of the country's population of more than 80 million people.(VNA)
