Viet Nam-Australia Joint Committee convenes

The 7th meeting of the Viet Nam-Australia Joint Trade and Economic Cooperation Committee (JTECC) was held in Canberra, Australia, on July 17.

The meeting, co-chaired by Vo Hong Phuc, Vietnamese Minister of Planning and Investment, and Warren Truss, Australian Trade Minister, aimed to assess the progress made in economic and trade cooperation between the two countries and draw up measures to further boost their cooperation in the future.

Delegates discussed bilateral, regional and multilateral issues and focused on areas of potential growth such as financial services, education, training and mining.

The meeting also drew representatives from business circles of the two countries and was concluded with a joint declaration, in which Viet Nam and Australia acknowledged that both are agricultural export- based countries that would benefit from the agricultural trade liberalisation process.

The two countries should also continue to cooperate in World Trade Organisation (WTO) Doha round talks, the joint declaration said.

Regarding regional and multilateral issues, the ministers agreed to speed up Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Australia and New Zealand.

The two ministers also agreed to hold the next session of the JTECC in Viet Nam that will focus on speeding up investment and trade, the facilitation of trade and investment cooperation between the two countries and building dialogue in policy making.

Two-way trade turnover between Viet Nam and Australia reached 7.3 billion AUD in 2006.-(VNA)
