Workshop marks ASEAN’s 40th anniversary
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) over the 40 years has formed its own identity that is recognised by the international community, said an international workshop in Ha Noi on July 19.
Researchers from China and ASEAN member countries participating at the workshop held by the Ha Noi National University delivered reports on the bloc’s 40-year historical context and challenges facing the group in the future.
Twenty-seven reports delivered at the workshop pointed out problems that ASEAN must address in the 21st century that include issues relating to territory and differences in members’ political systems and cultures.
Development gaps between the countries, the modest proportion of cooperation in economic fields and its limited position in the world economy are other problems that ASEAN has to cope with in the future, the reports said.
Some of the report lauded the group’s mechanism and principles for operation as been flexible and dynamic but named that they were at times too loose and inefficient, and need to be adjusted to meet the demands of a global community.(VNA)
