Philippines: Viet Nam- active member in building ASEAN

Viet Nam has played an active role in building a more cohesive Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), said a Philippine diplomat.

“Since Viet Nam’s accession to ASEAN, it has always been active in building the solidarity and enhancing unity within the region,” Philippine Ambassador to Viet Nam Laura Q. Del Rosario told a Viet Nam News Agency reporter on August 2.

During an exclusive interview on the ocassion of the 40 th founding anniversary of the ASEAN (August 8), the Ambassador said that Viet Nam has contributed to promoting cooperation among ASEAN member countries in implementing an initiative for the ASEAN integration, the development of the Greater Mekong Sub-region and the East-West Corridor.

According to the Philippine Ambassador, one of the most prominent achievements made by ASEAN was the opening of the ASEAN Free Trade Area to address the growing challenges of globalisation.

ASEAN is hoping to build a regional community, the ASEAN Community, in which all member states will work together for increased inter-regional relationship in socio-economics, culture and security.

Ambassador Rosario underlined that ASEAN needs to hasten the pace of economic integration in Southeast Asia and to deal more effectively with the ever-increasing challenges in a rapidly changing world if the goal of building the ASEAN Economic Community is to be met by 2015.

She also affirmed that the Philippines supports Viet Nam’s bid for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for 2008-2009. (VNA)
