Viet Nam, China ratchet up defence ties
Ha Noi (VNA) – An agreement on border defence cooperation between Viet Nam and China was inked during an official China visit by Vietnamese Defence Minister Gen. Phung Quang Thanh from August 26-31.
Minister Thanh and his Chinese counterpart, Sen. Lieut. Gen. Cao Gangchuan, agreed to enhance joint defence, with military training, scientific-technological research, and naval patrol work on the East Sea.
Regarding differences over the claimed sovereignty of the East Sea-Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, the two sides agreed to continue to negotiate to find a common and long-lasting solutions.
Both sides also agreed to find measures for mutual development and not let remaining differences affect bilateral ties.
During his stay in China, Minister Thanh and his entourage will pay visits to Chinese Party and State leaders and several military units.
