Vietnam joins APEC members in Sydney Statements

State President Nguyen Minh Triet voiced Vietnam’s overwelming support to the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC)’s initiatives at the 15th summit, which was opened in Sydney on September 8.

The State president said Vietnam backed APEC stand on climate change, which called for stronger efforts to cope with the global problem.

He also raised support for APEC measures to enhance energy efficiency and protect energy resources.

“Although being a developing economy that requires Vietnam to tap all available resources for poverty reduction, national industrialisation and modernisation, the Vietnamese Government has always paid special attention to environmental protection and placed the issue a top priority onto its socio-economic development strategy,” said the State leader.

He also affirmed Vietnam’s policy in support of the World Trade Organisation (WTO)’s statement on the Doha negotiation round.

The State President also reminded other 20 APEC member economies of the need to grant special and different treatment to members from the third world, especially new comers as Vietnam, in implementing commitments.

The meeting was wrapped up with the Sydney statement on climate change, energy security and clean development and a statement by APEC leaders on the Doha negotiation round.

Earlier on the day, President Triet held round-table talks with representatives from the US Business Alliance at APEC, which was set up in 1993 to handle US business circles’ operations in the region’s biggest economic organisation.
He spoke of a bevy of business opportunities in Vietnam for US industrial giants which are powerful in both finance and technology.

In the morning, President Triet attended a dialogue between APEC economic leaders and the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC). (VNA, Nhan Dan)
