Viet Nam joins Global Compact for responsible business

The United Nations Global Compact Network, a voluntary initiative aiming to foster sustainable and responsible business practice, has been officially launched in Viet Nam.

A launching ceremony was held in Ho Chi Minh City on September 26 with the presence of John Hendra, UN residential coordinator in Viet Nam, and Doan Duy Khuong, Vice President of the Viet Nam Chamber for Commerce and Industry (VCCI).

The event is part of a series of activities related to the Asian Forum on businesses’ social responsibility that will be opened on September 27 in HCM City.

The UN Global Compact Network encourages businesses to embrace ten universal principles in the areas of human rights, labour standards, environment, and anti-corruption. It calls on company to put these principles into their business strategies and daily business operations.

With close to about 4,000 organisations, trade unions and non-governmental organisations, and 3,100 businesses, including 500 in the Asian-Pacific region, the network is the largest voluntary initiative for businesses.

Khuong said VCCI would initiate an open discussion on the social responsibility of businesses, focusing on consequences and benefits that the compact would bring to Vietnamese society and businesses to facilitate the development of a dynamic and equitable economy.-(VNA)
