Viet Nam’s Top 200 businesses list announced
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Viet Nam announced a list of the country's 200 largest firms on October 1.
According to a UNDP policy dialogue paper entitled “Top 200: Industrial Strategies of Viet Nam’s Largest Firms,” topping the list are the Viet Nam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank), the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunication Corporation (VNPT), the Electricity of Viet Nam Corporation (EVN), the Bank of Investment and Development of Viet Nam (BIDV), Vietsovpetro joint venture and the Bank for Foreign Trade of Viet Nam (Vietcombank).
Jago Penrose, one of the three co-authors of the paper, said the survey began in 2006 with the financial backing of the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
Improving major business operations, expanding export markets and diversifying business areas are Vietnamese enterprises’ key strategies to raise competitiveness, he said.
Although Viet Nam’s largest firms are adapting to the increased competition, they still need to rely on government support for education and training, said Jonathan Pincus, UNDP senior country economist, adding that the Government should reform preferential policies in order to help large firms become less reliant on external investment.
