Vietnam-UK relations develop well, says legislator

Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Duc Kien expressed delight at the growing ties between Vietnam and Britain while receiving Peter Viggers, head of the Inter-parliamentary Union-British Group in Hanoi on October 26.

Mr Kien thanked the British Government for providing official development assistance (ODA) to Vietnam and assured his guest that the aid has been put to good use in the country. He lauded the UK’s rich trading history, supported by its rigorous legal system, and said Vietnam would like to follow Britain’s historical example.

Meanwhile, Mr Viggers congratulated Vietnam on its recent accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and its recent election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2008-2009 term, considering them as evidence of the country’s increasing role in the international arena.

He said Britain and Vietnam have enjoyed healthy trade relations, but said economic cooperation has yet to reach their full potential. Currently, British investment in Vietnam totals US$1.4 billion, making it the third biggest EU trading partner in the country.

During the four-day visit, the British guest will hold talks with representatives from the national Assembly Committee for External Affairs, the NA Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (VOV)
