Ha Noi hosts World Peace Council’s conference


A two-day conference of the World Peace Council (WPC)’s Executive Committee opened in Ha Noi on November 19 with the participation of 50 scholars and peace activists from 22 organisations all over the world.

The conference discussed a report of the WPC’s activities since the committee’s previous meeting in Brazil in May 2006, and the admission of new members. Delegates also passed a plan of actions and preparations for the WPC General Assembly’s conference scheduled for Caracas, Venezuela, in April 2008.

Delivering the WPC report, Executive Secretary Th. Pafilis stressed the organisation will to contribute to peace movements in the world, particularly in the regions of geographically and economically important significance such as the Balkan, Central and South Asia, and Africa.

According to the report, 10 percent of the world population now possesses 90 percent of the world’s properties while 30,000 people die for hunger everyday and more than a half of the world population earn less than 2 USD per day per capita.

The WPC expressed its solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle for independence, and demanded the implementation of the United Nations General Assembly’s Resolution on removing an embargo on Cuba.

The organisation also reiterated its clear stance regarding to the elimination of nuclear weapons and support of the UN’s principles.-(VNA)
