Viet Nam joins Int’l Organisation for Migration

Viet Nam became the 122nd member of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), at the 94th meeting of the IOM Council held in Geneva .

At the plenary session of the IOM Council, Vietnamese Foreign Affairs Ministry's Consular Department Director - Mr. Duong Chi Dung, said Vietnam’s accession marked an important step for close and effective cooperation between the country and the organisation.

He said it manifested Vietnam’s wish and readiness to cooperate with other countries and international organisations in the field and was evidence that countries valued Viet Nam’s role in solving issues of international migration.

Dung added that Vietnam’s IOM accession proved the government’s consistent foreign policy of diversification and multilateralisation, and its readiness to set up friendship and partnership within the international community, as well as its concern about international migration as a globally urgent problem.

The Vietnamese diplomat said Vietnam would actively carry out all its tasks and responsibilities as an IOM member country. He said he believed that cooperation between Viet Nam, IOM and other member countries would be enhanced to help each other overcome difficulties and challenges in international migration control, especially protecting the rights and benefits of migrants.

He added that as an IOM full member, Vietnam will be able to take part in activities and projects of IOM, receive assistance from IOM and its member countries and contribute to solving issues of international migration. (VNA)
