Viet Nam to chair Security Council Committee on Sierra Leone
New York (VNA) – Viet Nam will undertake the chair of the United Nations Security Council Committee on Sierra Leone in 2008, a Vietnamese representative to the UN Security Council said.
In addition, Viet Nam is also assigned the deputy chair of the Security Council Committees on Lebanon , the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Counter Terrorism Committee, Ambassador Le Luong Minh told the Viet Nam News Agency after he attended the council’s meeting on January 3.
Ambassador Minh said the January 3 session focused on discussing the council’s working agenda in January.
He said the council is slated to hear a report presented by the Committee 1718 Chair on the implementation of the resolution on the nuclear issue of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and will hold consultancy or discussions on the operation of the UN Peacekeeping forces in the Republic of Chad, the Central African Republic, Sudan, Cote d’lvoire, Kosovo, Nepal, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Georgia, and the Middle East.
The council members unanimously agreed that though the Myanmar issue is not on the Council’s January agenda, the council is willing to hold a meeting, if necessary, to hear Ibrahim Gambari, the UN General Secretary Special Envoy on Myanmar issue, to brief on his activities.
