Seminar discusses WTO impacts on agriculture
(VOV) In order to fulfill Vietnam’s WTO commitments, it is necessary to provide support for the agricultural sector and to coordinate competitive efforts of all economic sectors in different forms.
Dr Chu Tien Quang from the Central Institute for Research and Economic Management made the statement at a seminar in Hanoi on January 29 to discuss the impact of WTO membership on agriculture, farmers and the role of non-governmental organisations.
Moreover, Mr Quang added, it is necessary to help people learn more about WTO-related issues for economic development.
Some participants said having joined the WTO farmers will have opportunities to expand their markets. However, they also face many challenges in science and technology, production, and consumer demand. To meet the strict requirements of product quality and food hygiene and safety and to overcome these challenges, farmers need support from relevant agencies, especially from non-governmental organisations.
Pham Quang Dieu from the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Development said it is difficult to assess the impact of WTO membership on all economic sectors, especially on the agricultural sector. Therefore, it is necessary to closely observe the situation in order to assess the impact of WTO membership on localities and to help people access labour markets and develop diverse economic models such as collectives and associations.
The seminar was co-organised by the Central Institute for Research and Economic Management, and non-governmental organisations such as Action Aid, Cifpen, and Enable.
