Viet Nam: peaceful dialogues needed for East Timor


New York (VNA) – The Vietnamese representative to the United Nations Security Council called on all the parties concerned in East Timor to actively converse to address differences and speed up national reconciliation and development.
At the UN Security Council’s session on the East Timor situation held on February 21, Ambassador Le Luong Minh lauded the East Timorese Government and people for efforts to stabilise and reconstruct the country in the recent time.
He said East Timor should concentrate on addressing socio-economic difficulties and ensuring security as they are the country’s top priority in the meantime.
He affirmed that Viet Nam praised all efforts that the international community and the UN have made to help East Timor in its cause of securing stability and development.
“ Viet Nam supports the extension of the operation of the UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) in order to continue deploying missions to aid East Timor in consolidating peace and carrying out a national reconstruction strategy successfully,” the ambassador said.
At the UN Security Council session, UN Deputy Secretary General on peacekeeping Jean-Marie Guehenno reported that the security and social order in East Timor remained stable after recent attacks on the President and the Prime Minister.
He appreciated the international community’s enthusiastic response to and called for more continued support, for East Timor in its current difficult period.
