Vietnam calls for stability in Congo
New York (VNA) – Vietnam has applauded the efforts of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) to disarm and assimilate rebel soldiers and carry out projects to raise capacity of the Congolese government.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the Democratic of Congo on April 15, Vietnamese Representative to the UN Security Council, Ambassador Le Luong Minh, said there was still concern over possible instability in Kivu.
The Ambassador called on the Congolese government to continue developing measures to protect its citizens and coordinating with MONUC to ensure stability.
He urged relevant parties to implement commitments reached at the Kivu Conference in January 2008 and hold elections on schedule.
The ambassador said it is necessary to work out a comprehensive solution to Congo ’s security issue by increasing dialogue and building trust between Congo and its neighbouring nations, including Rwanda , in the spirit of last year’s Nairobi Declaration.
Minh confirmed Vietnam ’s support for the plan to reduce MONUC forces after fulfilling targets outlined in the UN Secretary General’s November 2007 report.
MONUC should pay more attention to development and reconstruction after conflicts for the sake of stability in Congo and the Great Lakes region.
