Vietnam calls on Ethiopia, Eritrea to resolve dispute

New York (VNA) – The Vietnamese UN Security Council Representative has called on Ethiopia and Eritrea to increase dialogues in order to resolve their border disputes.

Ambassador Le Luong Minh made the appeal at the council’s meeting in New York on April 24 to discuss an UN Secretary General special report on the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea , known as UNMEE.

Reports and statements made by council member representatives expressed particular concern about the tense situation along the Ethiopia-Eritrea border, which has led to UNMEE’s temporary withdrawal from the conflict area.

Minh cited border dispute between Ethiopia and Eritrea as the original reason behind the current conflict between the two African countries.

He called on the two countries to actively participate in dialogues in the spirit of mutual understanding and to develop border dispute resolutions in accordance with international laws and the agreements they have signed.

He also suggested the UN Secretary General’s conciliation efforts should focus more on encouraging the two sides to strictly adhere to their commitments and supporting the African Union to play a bigger role in the issue.
