Vietnam supports Iraq’s reconstruction efforts
Vietnamese Deputy Representative to the United Nations Security Council has voiced Vietnam’s support for Iraq’s efforts in national reconstruction and development.
Ambassador Bui The Giang made the statement at the council’s debate on the situation in Iraq which took place in New York on April 28.
The diplomat noted Iraq has recently begun to make progress in political security maintenance and socio-economic reconstruction. He said this could be seen in the decline in the level of violence across the country, the gradual assumption by the local authorities of the control of competencies for security and development of key pieces of legislation and international relations.
However, the ambassador expressed his concern about some challenges still present in Iraq, including the outbreak of sectarian violence, pervasive poverty, and a substantial amount of foreign debts and worsening of human rights situation.
Giang suggested Iraq should focus on resolving urgent security and socio-economic issues, such as improving legal system and administration, countering corruption, fighting weapon trafficking, disarming armed groups and reducing poverty.
He stressed the need to strengthen cooperation between the Iraqi Government, regional countries and the international community in the process of maintaining security and socio-economic reconstruction.
He also called on the United Nations and the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, known as UNAMI, to continue assisting Iraq in the constitutional reform, election organisation and national reconciliation.
