Government, organisations help Nargis victims
New York (VNA) - The Vietnamese Government decided to provide 200,000 USD as emergency aid to victims of cyclone Nargis in Myanmar .
Head of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN Le Luong Minh announced the decision in New York on May 9 at a meeting of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on emergency relief to Nargis victims in Myanmar .
The Vietnamese Ambassador expressed the solidarity and sympathy to the Myanmar Government and people.
Ambassador Minh also informed that the Vietnam Red Cross and Vietnamese enterprises pledged 70,000 USD to help Myanmar victims overcome the disaster aftermath. The military-run mobile phone operator Viettel donated 20,000 USD to the victims and affirmed that it would send experts to help recover the information network in Myanmar .
He expressed his belief that with the assistance of the UN through a campaign to raise 187 million USD from international community, and the support from the international organisations, the Myanmar Government and people would overcome the current difficulties.
At the meeting, the Singaporean Ambassador delivered an ASEAN joint speech showing understanding with the difficulties Myanmar has been suffering. He also stressed that the international community should coordinate with the Myanmar Government to overcome the disaster aftermath.
Cyclone Nargis has so far claimed the lives of at least 22,000 people and left another 42,000 still missing. The figures are predicted to continue to rise.
