Vietnam urges top priority for Lebanese interests
New York (VNA) – At a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on the situation in Lebanon, Vietnam has urged all concerned parties to accord top priority to the interests of the Lebanese people, promote national reconciliation and political dialogue for the planned Presidential election.
Addressing the UNSC consultation meeting in New York on May 8, Vietnam's Deputy Representative to the UNSC Ambassador Bui The Giang voiced his support to the enhanced cooperation between Lebanon and the United Nations, the League of Arab States and regional countries.
Ambassador Giang reiterated the need for all parties concerned to fully abide by Resolution 1559 (2004) and other concerned resolutions on the basis of respecting “political independence, full sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon, protection of assets and livelihood of civilians, and safety and security of UN personnel.”
“We continue to support the full implementation of these and other relevant UN resolutions with a view to a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the broader Middle Eastern region,” affirmed the Vietnamese diplomat.
The diplomat hailed the Lebanese Government’s efforts to extend its authority over all Lebanese territory and its cooperation with its neighbours to resolve issues of mutual concern. He also commended the Arab League’s reconciliation intermediary role and initiative.
However, he noted the unresolved challenges such as a standstill of the Presidential election, the targeted attacks against civilians and UN personnel, the recent intensification of protests and clashes in Beirut , the significant number of Israeli air violations and the humanitarian conditions in refugee camps.
