Vietnam calls for Burundi ceasefire

New York (VNA) – Vietnam has called for an end to violence in the central African nation of Burundi , urging involved parties to strictly abide by the September 2006 Comprehensive Ceasefire Agreement.

Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN Ambassador Hoang Chi Trung delivered the statement at a UN Security Council conference on Burundi situation held in New York on May 22.

“ Vietnam welcomes the arrival of a delegation of the Palipehutu - National Forces of Liberation (FNL) in Bujumbura for a resumption of peace talks with the Burundi Government,” said Ambassador Trung.

The Vietnamese representative voiced concern about the outbreak of fighting on April 17 following the attacks by the Palipehutu - FNL against the Burundi Government.

The diplomat said he supported the role of the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB) and the UN Peacebuilding Commission in working with Burundi to stabilise the country’s situation and facilitate political process.

Noting the socio-economic problems in Burundi especially in the context of the current global food crisis, Ambassador Trung called on the UN and the international community to extend further assistance to the troubled nation to facilitate socio-economic development, reconstruction and post-conflict peacebuilding for the sake of sustainable peace and stability in the country and the wider Great Lakes region.
