Vietnam, Norway expand cooperative fields

Oslo (VNA) – Vietnam and Norway plan to cooperate in culture and tourism while continuing to boost their on-going cooperation in shipping, shipbuilding, oil and gas, hydro-electricity, fisheries, environmental protection, education and healthcare.

The plans were agreed by visiting State President Nguyen Minh Triet and Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg during their talks in Oslo on June 6.

The two leaders agreed on the need to accelerate the two countries’ trade ties to tap its potential, discussing measures to encourage their businesspeople to establish stable and long-term partnership.

They shared the view that the relationship between the two countries was growing well recently with visits exchanged frequently, notably the visit to Vietnam by Norwegian King Harald V and Queen Sonja in 2004.

President Triet valued effective assistance the Norwegian Government and people have provided Vietnam for long time, especially in the period Vietnam has undertaken renovation and international integration.

He stated that Vietnam always treasures and wants to enhance traditional friendship and cooperation with the northern European country.

The Vietnamese leader welcomed the Norwegian Government’s recent adoption of “Vietnam Strategy”, considering the document as a crucial legal foundation for defining priorities in the two countries’ future cooperation.

Apart from bilateral issues, the two leaders compared notes on regional and international issues of mutual concern, particularly those on environmental protection and climate changes.

They agreed to strengthen coordination and mutual support at international forum, particularly at a time when Vietnam works for the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member and the Norwegian Prime Minister acts as the co-chair of the UN Senior Committee.

President Triet passed on to his host Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s invitation to visit Vietnam .

Ending the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of a series of agreements, including those on Norway ’s assistance to upgrade water supply network in northern Dien Bien Phu city and build a new water supply system in northern Lai Chau town.

The other agreements cover Norway ’s help to Hanoi National University to raise its capacity in mitigating geographical disasters and to Nha Trang University to improve its research and teaching capacity.

A letter of intent on financial assistance provided by Norway for the building of the UN environmental-friendly house in Vietnam was also signed.
