Ha Noi (VNA) – Deputy Foreign Minister Dao Viet Trung led the Vietnamese delegation to Myanmar to co-chair the sixth session of the Vietnam-Myanmar Joint Committee in Nay Pyi Taw.
During his stay in Myanmar , Deputy FM Trung paid a courtesy visit to the First Secretary of the Myanmar State Peace and Development Council Lieut. Gen. Tin Aung Myint Oo, and Myanmar Foreign Minister Nyan Win.
Trung took the occasion to express his deepest sympathy towards the Myanmar Government and people over the great losses in human and property caused by Cyclone Nargis as well as the difficulties the Myanmar Government and people are facing.
He hoped Myanmar would soon overcome the consequences of Cyclone Nargis, stabilise the people’s life and develop.
At the three-day session that lasted through June 18, both sides comprehensively reviewed bilateral cooperation since the fifth session in 2004.
The two sides focused their discussions on concrete orientations and measures to make bilateral relationship develop more effectively in commensurate with the two countries’ potentials.
They reached agreement on joint coordination in further expanding their cooperation in many concrete fields of mutual interest.
Both sides expressed their delight at the constant increase in two-way trade which fetched 97.2 million USD in 2007, up by 19.9 percent against 2006, and is likely to surpass 100 million USD this year.
The two sides hoped to promote the implementation of oil and gas and telecommunication projects and agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in agriculture, fisheries, healthcare, culture, tourism, automobile industry and other domains that both sides have potentials.
They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
At the end of the session, Deputy FM Dao Viet Trung and his Myanmar counterpart Kyaw Thu signed a memorandum of understanding for the sixth session of the Vietnam-Myanmar Joint Committee.
Both sides agreed to hold the seventh session in Hanoi , Vietnam , at a convenient time.
Also on the occasion, Deputy FM Dao Viet Trung attended the presentation of medical facilities and medicine by the Vietnam medical team to Myanmar to help Cyclone Nargis victims and a symbolic presentation of 30,000 USD by the Vietnam Oil and Gas Exploration and Exploitation Corporation to Myanmar.
