VN supports efforts to settle Zimbabwe issue


New York (VNA) – A Vietnamese representative to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has raised voice to support the international community’s efforts to find out peaceful solutions through negotiations for the political impasse in Zimbabwe.

Chairing the council’s first July session on July 8, Ambassador Le Luong Minh made his speech after hearing UN Deputy Secretary General Asha Rose Migiro’s report of Zimbabwe’s political situation after election and humanitarian activities in the African country.

According to Migiro, the ruling party Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) and the opposite Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) have agreed to talk on finding solutions to the crisis.

She also said the model of a solidarity government for Zimbabwe has received supports from regional countries as well as the UN, adding that the UN is willing to assist Zimbabwe to overcome their difficulties.

Addressing the session in the position of Vietnam’s representative, Ambassador Minh expressed his concern over the political instability and humanitarian operation in Zimbabwe.

He called on the concerned parties to restrain, leave differences aside and put the interest of the Zimbabwean people first in order to find out solutions fully meeting the desire of the Zimbabwean people.

He said Vietnam supported the African Union (AU), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the South African President to continue their role as mediators to foster dialogues and conciliation between the related sides in Zimbabwe under the spirit of a resolution approved by the AU at the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit in Egypt.

Underscoring the importance of dialogue and cooperation, the Vietnamese representative stated his opinion that Zimbabwe’s internal affairs must be decided by the Zimbabwean people.

He called on the international community to respect the Zimbabwean people’s independence, sovereignty and rights to self-determination, and avoid actions that could lead to a more complicated situation in the country.
