Vietnam backs UN efforts for Afghanistan reconstruction
New York (VNA) - Vietnamese Ambassador Le Luong Minh voiced support for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan ’s coordinating role in the country’s national reconstruction and ensuring security, stability and socio-economic development.
Ambassador Minh, who is Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN Security Council, chaired a UNSC session on Afghanistan in New York on July 9.
The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Kai Eide and UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes were among participants at the meeting.
The Vietnamese representative emphasised the Afghanistan government’s leading role in national construction and development. He also applauded its efforts to overcome difficulties as well as approve a National Development Strategy for the next five years.
Minh went on to say the Government of Vietnam sent a delegation to the International Conference in Support of Afghanistan held in Paris last month.
Vietnam is willing to share reconstruction experiences with the Afghanistan government through short-term training courses for officials, particularly in fields such as agriculture, rural development, health care, education and infrastructure development, he said.
In his report delivered at the session, Kai Eide said Afghanistan still faces various difficulties and challenges. He called on the international community to continue aiding and closely cooperating with the Afghanistan government to soon implement commitments reached at the International Conference in Support of Afghanistan .
Participating nations in the UN meeting also condemned the terror attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul on July 7, and pledged to help the Afghanistan government surmount the current difficulties and fulfill the National Development Strategy as well as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Ambassador Minh extended condolences to families of victims of the terror attack in Kabul . He also raised his concern over increasing violence as well as issues related to humanitarian affairs and food security in Afghanistan mentioned in the UN Secretary General’s report.
