Vietnam backs UN’s continued role in Congo
New York (VNA) - The United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) should be maintained at its current strength in order to fulfill its mandate, said a Vietnamese senior diplomat.
Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN Security Council (UNSC) Ambassador Le Luong Minh made the statement while chairing a UNSC consultation meeting on MONUC in New York on July 24.
“MONUC’s troop level should be kept under review with the ultimate aim of a gradual down-sizing, but only when the benchmarks set in the Secretary General’s November 2007 report have been met,” Minh told participants.
Having applauded MONUC’s role in supporting the Goma and Nairobi processes, the ambassador urged the mission to devote sufficient attention to assisting Congo ’s economic development and post-conflict reconstruction to help ensure long-term stability and development in the country.
However, Ambassador Minh raised deep concern about the continued violence in the Kivus, especially the attacks on civilians and civilian targets, non-governmental organisations and UN agencies and programmes.
The diplomat called upon all parties concerned to respect the ceasefire agreement as well as signed commitments.
At another meeting on July 24, the 15 UNSC members were unanimous in adopting the Resolution 1825 (2008) regarding the extension of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN)’s mandate by six months to help it fulfill its remaining tasks.
In the resolution, the UNSC asked Nepal to facilitate the UNMIN’s operations and at the same time take full advantage of the mission’s assistance.
The council also supported the Secretary General’s initiative to reduce UNMIN staff members in the coming time and proposed the UN chief to report on the resolution implementation before October 31, 2008.
