EC donates 1mln euros to flood victims

Hanoi (VNA) – The European Commission (EC) has decided to provide 1 million Euros as relief for the Vietnamese provinces most affected by typhoon Kammuri, which caused widespread destruction in early August, the EC’s delegation in the country announced on Oct. 8.

According to the delegation, the donation will fund the distribution of rice until the maize harvest in late November, prompt the regeneration of rice fields and irrigation systems, plus providing seeds, fertilisers and other farming materials destroyed by the storm.

In addition, the money will be spent on sterilising water wells, providing equipment and pills to clean water and prevent the spreading of diseases, and supplying household utensils, particularly mosquito nets and blankets.

The delegation also announced that a technical expert from the EC’s Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) in Bangkok has been sent to Vietnam to meet with governmental and non-governmental organisations that have been involved in dealing with the effects of natural disasters in Vietnam , and to assess the full impact of the storm.

Typhoon Kammuri hit Vietnam on Aug. 8, claiming 150 lives, leaving 81 injured and 45 missing. The hardest-hit were the northern provinces of Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Phu Tho.
