(VNA) – The newly-accredited US Deputy Chief of Mission in Vietnam , Virginia Palmer has said she will work to help realise agreements signed by leaders of the two countries during Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s visit to the US in June.

Meeting with local press on Oct. 14, Palmer said that in her capacity as US Deputy Chief of Mission in Vietnam , she will assist the Ambassador in reaching the target of promoting bilateral friendly and cooperative relations, including ties in economy, education and healthcare.

When asked about the impact of the US economic recession on Vietnamese exports, in particular garments, textiles and agricultural products, Palmer said that the US is considering orders sent by Vietnam since last Christmas.

The diplomat said she hoped that Vietnam ’s exports to the US , as well as the US ’s flow of investment into Vietnam will continue to increase significantly. Palmer expects two-way trade to exceed 12.5 billion USD this year.

Regarding the Vietnam-US Open Skies deal relating to all cargo services initialed in Hanoi on Oct. 7, Palmer asserted her belief that the accord will bring a range of benefits to the businesses and people of both countries.

The diplomat expects the two sides to negotiate the signing of a similar pact governing passenger transport in the near future.
