Vietnam boosts cooperation with East Timor

Jakarta (VNA) – Vietnam wishes to further strengthen the multi-faceted cooperation with East Timor for the benefits of the two countries’ people.

The statement was made by Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Huu Dung after presenting credentials to East Timor President Jose Ramos-Horta on October 16.

The ambassador informed the East Timor President about Vietnam’s achievements during the national construction and defence as well as challenges facing the country from the current global energy, food and financial crisis.

For his part, President Jose highly valued the relationship with Vietnam, which, he stress, was one of the first countries to recognise and establish diplomatic ties with the newly-accredited East Timor state.

He also praised Vietnam ’s achievements and experiences, especially in agriculture, considering them valuable lessons for his country.

The president said he hoped the two countries would continue strengthening the multi-faceted cooperation, especially in food, energy and seafood production and healthcare, and increasing the exchange of delegations.

The same day, Ambassador Dung was received by East Timor Prime Minister Xanana Guxmao, who emphasised the potential of bilateral cooperation in energy and food security. He said that East Timor plans to send students to Vietnam to study rice production experiences.

Dung also met with Foreign Minister Zacarias Albano da Costa, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Mariano Sabino and Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism Gil da Costa Alves.
