Vietnam backs int’l role in Middle East peace process
At a UN Security Council debate on the Middle East and Palestine issue in New York on Oct. 22, Ambassador Bui The Giang, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UNSC welcomed positive developments across the region over the past month, reflected by the continued intensive negotiations between Israel and Palestine albeit the former’s change of leadership and the general observance of the truce in Gaza.
He also praised the further efforts of the Palestinian Authority in consolidating security, promoting national reconciliation and implementing socio-economic development reforms, the resumed dialogues among regional stakeholders on issues of common interests, and the announced meeting between leaders of Israel and Egypt planned to be held this week to discuss an Arab proposal for comprehensive Middle East peace.
As the Annapolis deadline is drawing close, the Vietnamese representative emphasised the pressing need for the parties concerned to work towards more concrete and substantive results and refrain from any confidence-eroding action or statement.
“While recognising mutual responsibilities of the parties concerned to exercise maximum restraint and renounce violence, we urge Israel to take more urgent and practical steps to implement its obligations under international law, humanitarian and human rights laws in the first place, the Roadmap and relevant Security Council resolutions,” Giang said.
Regarding the Lebanon issue, Ambassador Giang welcomed the convening of the first session of the National Dialogue, the reconciliation process initiated among Lebanese parties, the establishment of diplomatic relations between Lebanon and Syria , and the ongoing efforts undertaken by the Lebanese Government to normalise external relations.
The Vietnamese diplomat reiterated Vietnam ’s support for the full implementation of Resolution 1701 (2006), especially with regard to the respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon.
