NA Chairman: Cooperation with Australia important

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam values Australia ’s role in the Asia-Pacific region and attaches importance to promoting cooperation with the country, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong said on Jan. 2.
Chairman Trong noted the development in the two countries’ bilateral and multilateral relations over the recent past at his meeting with the new Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Allaster Cox.

The Vietnamese and Australian parliaments signed an agreement during Trong’s official visit to Australia in early 2008, creating a basis for further development of cooperation between Australian and Vietnam .

Trong, however, said that much remains to be done to further expand and intensify Vietnamese-Australian relations.

The Vietnamese National Assembly would do its best and support the government in implementing agreements signed between the two countries, he said.

Australia wants to build long-term sustainable relations with Vietnam , both bilaterally and multilaterally, especially within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, said Ambassador Cox.

The two parliaments’ cooperation would make important contribution to building the partnership and cooperation, he said, adding that an upcoming visit by the Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, Harry Jenkins, is aimed at promoting this ties.
