Vietnam calls for regional solidarity during 2009
Vientiane (VNA) – Vietnam ’s legislative leader called upon Asian-Pacific lawmakers to enter into discussions regarding increased regional cooperation and to adopt wide-ranging measures to help the region tackle any challenges that arise during 2009.
National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong made this statement whilst addressing the 17 th annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF-17) in the Lao capital of Vientiane on Jan. 12.
This APPF meeting provided regional lawmakers with the chance to review their recent progress and to identify future challenges that must be overcome in order to transform the Asia-Pacific region into an economically-developed centre, serving peace and stability in the world throughout the 21 st century, Chairman Trong said.
He went on to say that over the past 20 years, numerous countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region have collaborated in promoting the economic development of their common home – the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
To date, APEC member economies have contributed approximately 60 percent of the world’s total GDP, 50 percent of global trade and 70 percent of global economic growth, the Vietnamese leader said.
In his analysis of the prospects and challenges facing the region in 2009, Chairman Trong requested regional parliamentarians to give their backing to a high-level declaration regarding “a new commitment to Asia-Pacific development” which was adopted at the 2008 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Peru .
This declaration highlights the work that is necessary to reinforce regional economic ties, carry out structural reforms, improve food security and tackle any social issues arising from the process of globalisation.
To effectively complete this work, APPF should to review its methods of operation and procedures, Chairman Trong said.
It is also necessary for APPF to strengthen its organisational mechanisms and increase its coordination with other organisations across the region, including ASEAN, ARF, AIPA, and APEC, as well as with other international institutions so as to transform the Asia-Pacific region into a dynamic community, working towards sustainable development and prosperity, he added.
“Lying in the Pacific belt, Vietnam has been and will always be working alongside other countries for the common cause of development, happiness and a bright future of all nations in the region and the world,” the Vietnamese leader stated.
He affirmed that the Vietnamese National Assembly, as an APPF member, is fully aware of the important role played by parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening regional links and ensuring international integration, as well as speeding up the settlement of complicated and sensitive issues that may have an adverse impact on economic development and regional trade.
“The Vietnamese NA wants to coordinate more closely with the law-making bodies of other countries in promoting parliamentary diplomacy to practically aid the implementation of the cooperation policies of APEC member economies and to further promote mutual understanding and trust, peace, friendship, cooperation and sustainable development in the region and the world at large,” Chairman Trong said.
At the APPF-17 meeting, Vietnamese law-makers made two proposals; one regarding gender equality in parliament and the other regarding food security.
Before departing for Hanoi , Chairman Trong attended a traditional Tet meeting with overseas Vietnamese where he praised their precious contributions to the economic development of their homeland.
He assured Vietnamese expatriates in Laos that they will receive the backing of the State when conducting business in their homeland and urged them to abide by their host country’s laws and work to contribute to its prosperity, as well as its special solidarity, friendship and cooperation with Vietnam in the future.
