Vietnam to pursue comprehensive foreign policy in 2009

Hanoi (VNA) – In 2009, Vietnam will implement a comprehensive foreign policy on the three key points of politics, the economy and culture, and a continuation of actively contributing to peace, stability and international cooperation, said a government leader.

Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem made this statement during a New Year meeting with the heads of foreign diplomatic corps and international organisations in Ha Noi on Jan. 14.

He said that 2009 is the year of cultural diplomacy and expressed his wish that cultural exchange programmes between Vietnam and other countries across the world would diversify to increase friendship and understanding between nations.

Argentine Ambassador Thomas Ferrari, on behalf of the diplomat corps, praised Vietnam’s efforts to control rates of inflation and stabilise the macro economy in the context of the current global financial crisis.

He said that the international community pledged to continue to support Vietnam in implementing five key measures, including financial subsidies to help increase production and consumption, prevent economic decline and stablise the economy during 2009.

The ambassador expressed his belief in Vietnam ’s capability to overcome the current challenges and expressed his hope that relations between Vietnam and other countries would be further strengthened through peaceful, cooperative and mutual beneficial measures.
