Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum closes

Vientiane (VNA) – Vietnam proposed two draft resolutions on food security and gender equality at the 17th Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF-17), which concluded in Vientiane , Laos , on Jan. 15 after four days of sitting.

Addressing the APPF-17, Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong underlined the difficulties and challenges currently facing the world, including global financial crisis, climate change, social and political instability in some regions and countries.

He also highlighted the roles of parliaments in regional alliance and international integration, solving complicated and sensitive issues, boosting mutual understanding and confidence, and maintaining peace and stability in the region and the world.

Chairman Trong also stressed the need to renew the APPF’s operation style, reinforce its structure and boost regional cooperation.

According to him, Asia-Pacific countries should strengthen regional links, structural reform and deal with social issues in harmonised manner in the globalisation process.

The APPF-17, attended by 300 delegates from 23 out of 27 member countries, focused discussions on political security related to Northeast and Southeast Asian countries, the peace process in the Middle East, peace on Korean peninsula and anti-cluster bomb issue.

The conference approved 16 resolutions regarding these issues, and two remaining resolutions are expected to be discussed at the 18th event, scheduled to take place in Singapore in 2010.
