The Representative of Vietnam to the UN Security Council, Ambassador Le Luong Minh, made the request at an UNSC consultation in New York on Feb. 3 to discuss the escalating tension in Muhajeria, South Darfur .
“We urge all the parties to fully abide by international humanitarian and human rights laws and accord the utmost priority to the safety of civilians as well as UN staff and humanitarian workers operating in Darfur ,” he said.
Whilst expressing his concern over possible implications of the military activities on the safety and livelihood of the local population, Minh asked the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), a rebel group fighting against the legitimate government of Sudan , to stop its provocation and return to the political process in order to seek for a durable solution to the conflict.
The ambassador also affirmed Vietnam ’s support for the important role played by the UN, UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), international organisations and regional countries in helping to deescalate the current tension and bring in a lasting and comprehensive solution to the Darfur conflict.
