Australia’s National Day celebrated in Hanoi

A meeting was held in Hanoi on February 13 by the Vietnam-Australia Friendship Association (VAFA) to mark the 221st anniversary of Australia’s National Day (January 26).

Ambassador to Vietnam Allaster Edward Cox reviewed Australian’s achievements in politics, economics, culture, science and technology and education.

VAFA Vice President Nguyen Kim Hoan spoke of the strong development of the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Australia. He noted that two-way trade has increased significantly from US$4.2 billion in 2006 to US$4.6 billion in 2007 and US$6.9 billion in 2008.

He said about 15,000 Vietnamese students are studying in Australia while thousands of others are enrolled in training courses run at various Australian establishments in Vietnam. Australia is also one of the leading providers of scholarships for Vietnam.

He expressed his hope that bilateral ties will further develop in the future for mutual benefit and for peace, stability and development in the region and the world at large.(VOV)
