Deputy PM hails people’s diplomacy work

VOV - Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem has affirmed that along with its advantages, people-to-people diplomacy plays an important role in creating a combined strength within the diplomatic sector.

Addressing a conference in Hanoi on March 4, Mr Khiem, who is also Minister of Foreign Affairs, stressed that in the current context of international integration, people-to-people diplomacy is part and parcel of the diplomatic sector.

He acknowledged the achievements of people-to-people diplomacy in 2008, saying it helped foster friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and other nations while promoting the country’s image abroad so as to create a favourable environment for national socio-economic development.

According to Mr Khiem, in 2009, the people’s diplomacy should overcome weaknesses in its coordination mechanism and management, enhance public communications and pay more attention to personnel training to boost the country’s foreign relations bilaterally and multilaterally.

Last year, the Government of Vietnam provided VND90 billion in non-refundable aid to the Cambodian Royal Government to strengthen cooperation in the field of education and training, according to the MPI. In addition, Vietnam also granted more than 1,800 scholarships to Cambodian students in the field of education, culture, sports, and inspection.

In 2008, two-way trade between the two countries reached US$1.7 billion, up 42 percent compared to the previous year. Currently, around 39 Vietnamese projects capitalized at US$211.2 million have received business licenses from the government of Cambodia.
