VN steps up multifaceted cooperation with Qatar

VNA - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s State-level visit to Qatar from March 7-9 is expected to create a breakthrough in the two countries’ economic, investment and trade relations, and foster the cooperation in the fields they have potentials such as oil industry, labour and agriculture.

The visit, the first made by a Vietnamese PM to the Gulf country since the two established the diplomatic ties on Feb. 8, 1993, also aims to fortify and expand their political relations, thus helping deepen the multifaceted cooperation, and to boost coordination on international and regional forums.

During the visit, the two countries will sign several documents to establsh a legal framework for their investment and business cooperation. The agreements to be signed include those on double taxation avoidance, aviation, and investment promotion and protection.

Vietnam and Qatar have been seeing their relations developing, particularly after the Vietnamese Embassy opened in Doha in March 2008.

Over the recent years, the two countries have exchanged many visits, including the Vietnam visit by the Qatar PM in April last year and the Qatar visit by Vietnamese Deputy PM Nguyen Sinh Hung in December 2007.

The bilateral economic relations also made firm steps of development. The two countries signed a number of agreements for cooperation in aviation, economics, culture, science and technology, and oil and gas industry.

Their two-way trade reached 32.8 million USD in 2007 and surged to 79.5 million USD in 2008. As from 2006, the two countries experienced strong development in labour cooperation with some 11,000 Vietnamese guest workers working in various fields in Qatar.

In March 2003, Qatar Airways opened a direct route connecting Doha to Ho Chi Minh City with four flights per week. The airlines plans to increase to 7 flights and open a new route to Hanoi in future./.
