China increases shrimp imports from Vietnam

VNA - Although Vietnamese exports to traditional markets have decreased sharply, China is emerging as a lucrative importer of shrimp, said the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

The increase has made China fourth among Vietnam ’s top shrimp importers. Since the beginning of this year, shrimp exports to China have reached 1,000 tonnes, valued at 12 million USD, and accounting for 8.2 percent of total shrimp exports.

Aquatic produce experts say that China is a high-potential market for Vietnam ’s shrimp exporters, thanks to favourable geological conditions and customers preference.

Deputy Chairman of VASEP and General Director of Minh Phu Seafood joint stock company Le Van Quang remarked that apart from China, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to other primary markets is likely to fall over the next few months; this year’s shrimp exports are forecast to decline by 30 percent against last year./.
