Expatriates mark National Day with celebration, charity

VNA 31/08/2009 - The Vietnamese community abroad has marked the August Revolution and National Day on September 2 with celebrations and charitable activities all over southeast Asia.
In Laos, the Vietnamese Association in Vientiane held a meeting on August 31 to mark the results of a campaign that raised 46.7 million VND for a programme in support of children with heart problems.

In Cambodia, the Vietnamese Association and the Vietnamese embassy inaugurated a Khmer-Vietnam primary school in Mien Chay district in the capital city of Phnom Penh in celebration of the National Day.

Vietnamese Ambassador Ngo Anh Dung was also present at the inauguration ceremony.

At the event, representatives from the Vietnamese embassy and southern Vietnamese provinces presented gifts for the freshly-built school which is described as the biggest in Cambodia .

The Tan Tien school was built from April 2008 at a cost of over 200,000 USD. Of the funding, the State Committee for Vietnamese Overseas contributed 86,000 USD and the Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front gave 40,000 USD while the rest was raised by Vietnamese overseas and provided by individual domestic and foreign donors.

In Thailand, the Vietnamese embassy held a get-together with overseas Vietnamese on August 30 in observation of the August Revolution and the National Day.

The event was turned into a fund-raiser for Agent Orange/dioxin victims at home./.
