The Ambassador, however, welcomed the goodwill demonstrated by the NCP and SPLM in abiding by the decision of the Court of Arbitration on Abeyei’s status, and settling difference relating to the referendum law.
“A successful completion of the Abeyei arbitration process will bring about a significant impetus for further progress in the implementation of the CPA,” he said.
He highly appreciated UNMIS’s proactive engagement in the CPA’s implementation process.
“UNMIS’s close consultation with the Sudanese government in promoting reconciliation in Southern Sudan , building its electoral assistance capacity, facilitating the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) process, mobilising resources for recovery and development are commendable as well,” Ambassador Trung said.
He encouraged UNMIS to strengthen its cooperation with the Sudanese government and other CPA partners to ensure a conducive and stable environment for credible and successful elections.
Besides, he also encouraged the Joint Chief Mediator, Qatar and Libya to make further efforts to resume the Darfurian peace process by the end of this month and hoped that this will make a great contribution to the implementation of the CPA in particular and restoration of peace and stability in Sudan in general./.
