Meeting in Hanoi marks Cuba’s Giron victory

VNA 15/04/2011 - The Party, State and people of Cuba will spare no efforts to protect and develop the close friendship with Vietnam , Cuban Ambassador to Vietnam Fredesman Turro Gonzalez has said.

The diplomat was speaking at a meeting held in the capital city of Hanoi on April 15 to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of Cuba ’s Giron victory (April 19, 1961), which marked the first defeat of the US army in America .

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, and President of the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association (VCFA), attended the event, co-organised by the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations, the VCFA and the Ministry of National Defence.

The historical Giron victory took place at a time when Vietnam was staging the resistance war against the US imperialists to liberate the South. Just four and a half months earlier, Vietnam and Cuba officials established diplomatic relations.

Since then, the two nations have assisted each other, both materially and spiritually, in the fight against the common enemy – the US aggressors./.
