They will also share experience in coping with non-traditional security challenges, contributing to elevating the traditional friendship and cooperation between the armies and people of the two countries to a new height.

This was signalled during the Aug. 23 meeting between Vietnamese Defence Minister, General Phung Quang Thanh, and his Singaporean counterpart Ng Eng Hen, who arrived in Vietnam on Aug. 22 for an official visit to the country.

At the meeting, Thanh spoke highly of the visit by the Singaporean delegation, saying he hoped that the visit would contribute to bolstering mutual understanding and create a foundation to enhance the traditional and fine friendship between the armies and people of the two countries.

They shared viewpoints on regional and international security situations and briefed each other on each country’s socio-economic development, policies on national defence and bilateral and multilateral international cooperation in the field.

Later the same day, the Singaporean delegation was received by State President Truong Tan Sang.

The State leader expressed his delight at the socio-economic performance of the neighbouring country and appraised the bridging role of Singapore in the ASEAN community.

He said he hoped that bilateral relations between the two countries’ armies would be strengthened and yield practical results.

For his part, the Singaporean minister congratulated Sang on his election as State President.

Since 2009, Vietnam and Singapore had launched an array of activities to boost defence ties, he said, expressing his wish that relations between the two countries would develop further in the future.

More and more Singaporean entrepreneurs were investing in Vietnam , he said, adding that many Vietnamese students had gained successful academic results in his country.

Singapore will continue to improve cooperation with Vietnam in many areas, the minister said./.
