East Sea cooperation discussed at seminar

(VNA - 12/12/2012) - A seminar is taking place in central Da Nang city on December 12-13 to discuss issues relating to cooperation in the East Sea.

Themed “East Sea Cooperation – History and Development”, the event drew more than 100 scientists and experts on the East Sea.

The seminar offers an opportunity for scientists and experts to announce new East Sea research results and clarify strategies, economic potential, culture, cooperation and development capability between countries in the East Sea region from a historical and prospective angle.

It also provides historical and cultural documents to define geographical positions and the legal basis for cooperation and development relating to the East Sea, and among nations in the region.

During the seminar, participants delivered speeches analysising scientific evidence relating to the relationship between Vietnamese people and the East Sea, and the Hoang Sa fleet’s itinerary to establish and conduct sovereignty over Viet Nam’s Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes, as well as introducing Western documents and old maps relating to Viet Nam’s sovereignty over the two archipelagoes.

The historical documents and scientific evidence affirms that the East Sea is an integral and inseparable part of Vietnamese people’s foundation and development history.

The event reflects Viet Nam’s consistent affirmation to solve all disputes in a peaceful manner and based on international law, especially the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
